Assessments
For this unit, we will have seven main assessments. They are as listed below:
1. (Entry Level) - Quickwrite (1/2 pg) on each of the six themes in A Christmas Carol. Students will talk about whether or not they agree with this theme and explain their reasoning.
2. (Formative) - Webercise/Webquest - learn about Dickens' life and main characters in ACC.
3. (Formative) - Essay Outline - Main ideas regarding Scrooge's transformation
4. (Formative) - A Christmas Carol flashcards
5. (Formative) - Graphic Organizer - Relating themes in ACC to real-life events.
6. (Summative) - Final Essay
7. (Summative) - Final Test
For this unit, students will be expected to complete activities that result in their ability to successfully complete these seven items listed above. Assignment #1 is the quick write on the 6 major themes and requires only students' prior knowledge and information they have come into my class with. Assignment #2 will be completed before we begin to read the novel to give students some background information on the author and the main characters in the novel, before they begin to tackle such a high-level text. Assignment #3 is an outline designed to help students organize their information/evidence and plan the flow of their essays, which will be collected with their final essays. They will complete this outline during class with the aid of a Prezi presentation. Assignment #4 is flashcards which are designed to help students remember important quotes and check their comprehension of the events in the novel. Assignment #5 is the graphic organizer which students will complete half in groups and half individually. They will find quotes from the novel that support each of the 6 themes in groups, and then read the four assigned articles on the classroom iPads and copy quotes from those that support each of the 6 themes as well. Assignment #6 is the final essay where students must analyze Scrooge's transformation. Lastly, Assignment #7 is the final test where students will be tested on basic comprehension to a formal analysis of the 6 themes in a short answer format.
